Episode Guide: Movies

Below you will find summaries and a few pictures of the Yu Yu Hakusho movies.

Yu Yu Hakusho: The Golden Seal

It's summer vacation! As Yusuke and Kuwabara enjoy their free time in a little fight Botan comes flying in with terrible news: Koenma has been kidnapped! Someone always has to run Yusuke's vacation! The kidnappers, Koashura and Garuga order a ransome, the Golden Seal; the seal that proves who is the ruler of Spirit World. It must be in their hands by sunset or Koenma dies.

Having no choice, Yusuke, Botan, and Kuwabara head off to Magma Mountain with the Golden Seal. Many demons are after the seal, knowing that if they get it, they get control of Spirit World. After beating up some demons on a mountain trail the gang enters a dark forest. There, a tree demon manages to take the seal and imprison Yusuke and Kuwabara in a regenerating cage made of roots. Botan makes an attempt to retrieve the seal, but is knocked off her oar and is attacked with the sharp root-like fingers of the demon.

But Kurama and Hiei show up just in time. Kurama stops the attack and catches Botan when she falls off her oar and releases Yusuke and Kuwabara. Hiei destroys the demon and regains possession of the seal. He returns it to Yusuke and tells him to hurry and save Koenma. He and Kurama will take care of the other demons after the seal.

With the volcano in sight Yusuke and company slash their way through more demons. With only a few minutes left, Kuwabara makes his Spirit Sword grow and flings Yusuke up onto the top of the volcano. (Causing Kuwabara to smash into the mountainside.)

Yusuke and Botan quickly exchange the Golden Seal for Koenma. Koashura, a toddlier like Koenma, gleefully takes it. He claims he'll now have his revenge on Koenma, but his partner-in-crime has other plans. He takes the seal, sending Koenma and Koashura flying over to a edge, where they barely manage to hang on for dear life over the lava, and hurts Botan. He shows himself to be the wanted criminal Yasha, who reflects attacks right back at the source. Which he proves when he reflects Yusuke's Spirit Gun right back at Yusuke.

Yusuke and Yasha begin to fight, but Yusuke is no match. He is beaten to a pulp and Yasha goes to kill Koenma. But Yusuke revives, saying he will protect Koenma, because he brought him back to life. Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara appear and hurry to help the two babies and Botan as Yusuke fights. Yusuke shoots another Spirit Gun, but it reflects back at the wall and causes a flow of lava to slam into Yasha. The magma hardens on the demon, making him unable to use his reflecting powers. Yusuke uses the last of his strength to shoot a final Spirit Gun that kills Yasha.

Powerless, Yusuke falls down towards the lava. Botan grabs him and grabs the seal. They rejoin the team and Koashura reveals his motives: He wanted to get revenge on Koenma because back in kindergarten Koenma stole the girl he had a crush on!

In the end Koashura gets off with ten thousand spankings and Yusuke informs Botan and Kuwabara that winning the battle was only luck! This causes the two to become very angry, but Yusuke runs away, saying he has a date to get to.

Estimated Running Time: 30 minutes

The overall story is pretty good and entertaining. The movie, however, was not translated and dubbed by FUNimation, making certain differences. The voice actors were completely different; not even similar. Yusuke has more a Kuwabara voice and Kurama's voice is much deeper than FUNimation's version. Most of the other voices were fine.

I don't get the whole Kuwahara thing. In Japanese it says Kuwabara. It could be a way of reading the kanji. The movie was released in 1998 according to the copyrights and with the Ninku movie as it was in Japan. Due to different dubbers than the TV series a major line is changed in the dub. Yusuke says he will save Koenma because he brought him back to life in Japanese, but in English he says it is because of the king Koenma will become. That's not a very Yusuke thing to say.

Anyway I think watching this movie in Japanese with or without subtitles, depending on if you understand Japanese well, is your best bet to enjoy this movie to the fullest.

Fun Fact:

Notice in the following picture the store is named My Lord? That may have something to do with the movie being about Lord Koenma (Koenma-sama).
